WHAT'S THE RIGHT WEIGHT FOR ME?

Today, you can find everywhere people thatīs asking this question to themselves.

It should be a question with an easy answer, but it is not so easy as it seams because people don't have the same body type, so there's not a single answer that will fit all. Even among people that has the same age and high, you will find some more developed than others.

But nevertheless what I said before, you can always know if you are in a healthy weigh range for your height.

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

Not everyone follow the same schedule to grow and develop, but there's something common to everybody: teens go trough a period of faster growth

They have faster muscle growth (particularly the boys), and both boys and girls have spurts in height and weight due to the hormonal changes during puberty.

These changes keep on happening for several years, and the average person can grow as much as 10 inches before reaching his full adult height.

And as they amounts of muscle, fat and bone of their bodies change, must guys and girls can gain weigh very fast during this time. But that extra weight might be right as long as body fat, muscle and bone are in the right proportion.

Not all the kids develop at the same rate, some start developing as early as age 8 but some others donīt do it until they are 14 or so. For this reason you can find two people with the same age and the same height and two very different weights.

It can be very stressing to feel heavier or taller suddenly, so many adolescents feel self-conscious about weight


THE RIGHT WEIGHT BMI INDEX

Experts have developed a way to tell if a person is in the healthy weight range for his height and they call it the body mass index or BMI index.

BMI is just the formula that doctors use to estimate how much body fat a person has, and they do it based on the person's height and weight. The height and weight relation gives a BMI number that is then plotted on a chart that tells the person whether he or she is underweight, average weight, at risk of becoming obese, or obese

Although itīs a good mechanism, it's not so easy to figure the body mass index for teens than it is for adults (again puberty complicating things)

The BMI charts have special lines, named percentile lines that help individuals compare their BMI to those of a very large group of people with the same age and gender. Of course there are different BMI charts for guys and girls under the age of 20.

A teen whose BMI is at the 50th percentile is considered to be close to the average of the age group. If it is above the 95th percentile is considered overweigh (because 95% of the group has a smaller BMI than he or she does.

A teen below the 5th percentiles is considered underweight (because 95% of the group has a bigger BMI than he or she does.


WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE IN THE 60TH PERCENTILE OF THE RIGHT WEIGHT?

The 60th percentile means that compared to people of the same gender and age, 60% weight less than you and 40 % weight more than you.

Note: Make sure that you calculate your BMI with an accurate height and weight measurement (tape measures and bathroom scales aren't precise, the best is to be weighted and measured by a doctor).


WHAT DOES BMI TELL A DOCTOR?

If your doctor calculates your BMI, he can do more than just telling you your current weight, he can also take into account if you are during puberty and he can also track past year's measures to track if you are at risk of becoming over or under weight.

To spot this kind of risks early can be helpful to make changes in diet and exercise before you get into weight problems. And weight problems is not only how you look, if you are obese you increase your risk of developing health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

An obese teen is more likely to become an obese adult, and obese adults can also develop serious health conditions such as heart disease.

You must also consider that some people have a high BMI because they have a large frame or a lot of muscle (like bodybuilders and athletes) instead of excess fat. And likewise a small person with a small frame might have what are considered a normal BMI and still have too much body fat.

These are other good reasons to talk about your BMI with your doctor.


HOW TO BE SURE IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT WEIGHT?

Only your doctor can tell you if you really have a weight problem. He knows your records, and knows if you're growing normally. He can also take decisions based on your family background (you might have inherited a weight problem), and if he thinks that your weight isn't in a healthy range, he might give you a specific dietary and exercise recommendations based on your individual needs.

You can be sure that following a doctor's or dietitian plan especially designed for you, will work better than following fad diets.

Fad diets and the starvation plans followed by some teens, can slow down growth and sexual development. And weigh loss with extreme measures, usually doesn't last.

If being too skinny is your problem, and you are a teen, you might be weighting less than other teens at your age and be fine, because your body might be following an different schedule than some of your peers, and your body is changing at a different rate.

Most underweight teens gain the weight that they would like to have when they finish puberty, without the need of any plan to gain weight. (Health problems can also produce underweight, another reason to visit a doctor and tell him about your weight concerns)

Of course that some teens are underweight because they are having eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia, that also require a professional's attention.


CAN YOU INHERIT A WEIGHT PROBLEM?

People belonging to different races and nationalities tend to accumulate fat in different parts of their bodies, but no matter what genes you inherit, you can keep your weight at a normal level for a person like you eating right and being active.

Worst than genes are the eating and exercise (or lack of it) habits that can be passed down. In most households these habits have an even greater effect than inherited genes. If your family likes to eat a lot of high-fat foods and do little on no exercise, you probably will do the same, but habits can be changed for the better.
