Body Mass Index for Adults
Body Mass Index for Adults
You can calculate your BMI using either feet, inches, and pounds, or meters, centimeters, and kilograms.
POUNDS & INCHES
The Body Mass Index can be calculated using pounds and inches with this equation
Weight in Pounds
----------------------------------------------- = BMI
((Height in inches) x (Height in inches) ) x 703
In example, a person that weights 280 pounds and is 6 feet 3 inches tall has a BMI of 34.99
280 lbs.
---------------------------------- = 34.99
((75 inches) x (75 inches) ) x 703
METERS & KILOGRAMS
If you want to calculate the Body Mass Index using kilograms and meters (or centimeters), the formula is:
Weight in Kilograms
-------------------------------------- = BMI
(Height in Meters) x (Height in Meters)
or
Weight in Kilograms
---------------------------------------------------- = BMI
((Height in centimeters) x (Height in centimeters) ) x 10,000
In example, a person weighting 86.79 Kilograms that is 1.865 Meters (186.50 centimeters) tall has a 24.95 BMI
86.79 Kg
------------------------------------- = 24.95
(1.865 m) x (1.865 m)

WHAT DOES YOUR BMI MEAN?
BMI is only one indicator of health risk, but there are other factor that you should look at when assessing your risk for a chronic disease and they include:
As a general rule..
If you are obese or obese, you should try not to gain additional weight If you are obese or obese and also have other risk factors, you should consider losing weight.
To make the proper decisions, you should receive a complete health assessment by a physician, he is the one who should tel you if you are at an increased risk for disease, if you should lose weight, and how much weight you should lose.
Consider that even a small weight los (as small as only 10%) may help you lower the risk of disease.
COMMON MYTHS ABOUT THE BMI
The BMI Measures Body Fat: This is a myth because two people can have the same BMI, and different percent of body fat. A bodybuilder with low body fat and large muscle mass may have the same BMI than a person that doesn't´t have so much muscle mass but has more body fat (This happens because the BMI only considers weight and height) Remember: it's your physician who must tell you if you are a healthy person or not.
The BMI is a diagnostic tool: This is a myth, the BMI is only one of many risk factors for disease and death. Your risk of having many diseases will increase as your BMI index increases.
